After a calm night on the Garrison Bight Mooring Field, we cast off and motor around Fleming Island. Late yesterday, Oz took the dinghy and bicycle to fetch a required part from West Marine: a double block for the mainsail sheets. One day late. And milk and beer. Weather looks calm, maybe too calm –Continue reading “Depart Key West – heading south and west”

To Key West
We had a long fast day of sailing from Marathon to Key West with full crew aboard: our Marathon friends, Taylor, Captain Frank and Dave. We had a wind on our quarter the whole way, 15 to 25 knots, and we made SOG 8 to 10 knots. Broke the critical mainsail sheet double sheave. MustContinue reading “To Key West”
Shelter from the storm
It’s Sunday morning and one hour later. We lost two days of travel due to the storm and gained a safe and beautiful shelter at Lucinda and Oran’s backyard. They have been life savers with their generous help, support and company.
A different kind of Purim
We celebrated Erev Purim on the deck at the Garrison Bight Morning Field. The lights of neighboring mooring boats added festivity to our humble meal and small company. We had no hamantaschen but plenty of beer and wine and audience that listened to the story of Purim for the first time. Thursday welcomed us withContinue reading “A different kind of Purim”
Up the Mast
Today, the team sent a man up the mast to begin the replacement of the worn mainsail halyard (the line that pulls the mainsail into position). We bought the new halyard in Coconut Grove, and we’ve been waiting to have some time at a dock and a crew to do the work. We brought downContinue reading “Up the Mast”
Down the Keys
We left Miami three days ago and sailed in two long days through Key Largo to Marathon. Currently docked at a wonderful, generous friend’s house in Key Colony. Lots of freshly-caught fish to eat.
Named! Bat HaYam
We finally applied the name and home port decals. Yes, this big cat is registered in Colorado, whose shores it will never touch. Oz says: This was a very emotional and exciting moment for me. I am celebrating progress in this adventure with Ori and Lulu. (It took forever to scrap the old name)
Did we ever say there’s no schedule on a sailboat?
It’s now about a month since we purchased our Leopard47 Catamaran. Since then we encountered numerous technical challenges that come with buying a 20 year old boat, beautiful as she is. We are anchored in Coconut Grove in South Miami just outside of Dinner Key Marina. Marinas, we found out, are all full at thisContinue reading “Did we ever say there’s no schedule on a sailboat?”
